Alexandria Board of Selectmen
January 27, 2009
Members Present: Cindy Williams and Tom McGowan
Distribution of Minutes: January 20
Approval of Minutes: January 13
Departments Heads:
Jeff Cantara asked the selectmen to reflect the proposed changes he made in the 2009 budget. He told the selectmen that the part-time wage line was his biggest concern as that person does a lot of things such as painting equipment and performing general maintenance around the garage that allows the remainder of the crew to be out in the field. Cindy asked about gravel pricing; Jeff said that is forthcoming. Cindy asked about the loader; Jeff replied that the company is working with the town to solve the issue.
Maggie LaBerge said that the planning board will be printing on 50-60 copies of the proposed land use regulations in order to save money. It is also posted on the website for people to review. The survey have been coming back in and indicate that people want some growth, light industry, more recycling, uses for the AVS and are satisfied with town services. The Capital Improvement Plan will be updated later. The excavation regulations will be updated in order to coincide with state law. Jim Phelps has submitted the required bond for his pit on Smith River Road. She asked if the town was going to be eligible for economic stimulus money. Jeff said he has projects ready to go; Christie will get them on the list. Maggie asked about the old town hall project. Christie does not know where that project is. In response to a question, Maggie indicated that the planning board has not been busy. Maggie stated that there are three positions open for the planning board.
Dennis Manchester asked if a demolition permit is necessary to take down a building. He was told it is not; the town does not have them. The question came about because the fire department has been given a building for burn training. Dennis asked if the town has taken over lots with buildings on them. He was told no because the town does not yet know what materials are on those lots. A determination will be made at a later date. Dennis asked if the Fowler River Road or Bristol Hill Road buildings were on the deeding list; they are not. Dennis said if the town will do the testing, the fire department will do the demolition/burning.

Cindy pointed out to the audience that the town is in danger of losing some revenues from the state. There is a meeting on Friday that Christie will attend in order to get some more information. The current budget is up 13%. Cindy said she is not comfortable with that and further cuts are to be considered after the public hearing. Jeff said he can work with a smaller budget, but it will be necessary to cut paving projects. They will concentrate on brush cutting, ditching and general maintenance.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned by a vote of 2-0 at 7:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Christie Phelps,
Town Administrator
